The Graduate

The Graduate (1967)
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The Graduate was the one of the first movies with the topic of youth rebellion at the time. Like the Godfather it paved the way for many films that have come out since.  The story of a college graduate not knowing what to do with his life is a common theme today. The quirky and funny camera angles were perfect, such as when Benjamin was forced to go scuba diving in the pool or the leg scene.
2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
The Graduate is a movie youth in revolt, a boring college graduate who has nothing going for him, until he gives a call to a family friend and the older neighborhood “babe”.  The movie is mainly about the transition from a dull and scared boy to a witty and spontaneous man who falls in love with the daughter of the woman he has been seeing, Mrs. Robinson.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
The article corresponded with our class discussion very well. It went over the transition of before and after Mrs. Robinson, and how Elaine made Benjamin realized his actions without knowing it. Mrs. Robinson was not love and Benjamin realized this after half a date, she made him realize what real love was.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including  your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
Like many other college students I can relate to the film in the way of me not knowing what I will be doing after graduation. The Graduate had the perfect amount of comedy, drama, and romance ( between both Ms. Robinson and Elaine). The transition of the boring Benjamin to the fun and outgoing happened very fast, but the movie took a turn for the better at this point.
