The Graduate

The Graduate (1967)
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The Graduate was the one of the first movies with the topic of youth rebellion at the time. Like the Godfather it paved the way for many films that have come out since.  The story of a college graduate not knowing what to do with his life is a common theme today. The quirky and funny camera angles were perfect, such as when Benjamin was forced to go scuba diving in the pool or the leg scene.
2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
The Graduate is a movie youth in revolt, a boring college graduate who has nothing going for him, until he gives a call to a family friend and the older neighborhood “babe”.  The movie is mainly about the transition from a dull and scared boy to a witty and spontaneous man who falls in love with the daughter of the woman he has been seeing, Mrs. Robinson.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
The article corresponded with our class discussion very well. It went over the transition of before and after Mrs. Robinson, and how Elaine made Benjamin realized his actions without knowing it. Mrs. Robinson was not love and Benjamin realized this after half a date, she made him realize what real love was.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including  your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
Like many other college students I can relate to the film in the way of me not knowing what I will be doing after graduation. The Graduate had the perfect amount of comedy, drama, and romance ( between both Ms. Robinson and Elaine). The transition of the boring Benjamin to the fun and outgoing happened very fast, but the movie took a turn for the better at this point.

The Godfather 1972

The Godfather (1972)

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The Godfather was one of the highest grossing films of all time and has been an inspiration for many great movies and TV shows such as The Goodfellas and Sopranos and fpr very good reasons. The movie itself was 175 minutes long but felt like 10 minutes, every scene either left you wondering what was coming next or shocked at what had just happened. The cinematography was fantastic, much like the camera angles and lighting from Citizen Kane.
2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
“The Godfather was a really good movie squeezed from a best seller” and everything about it screamed 1940’s gangster. The movies was long but not drawn out, it had the perfect amount of killing, drama, and character progression. The movie differed from the book in one way and that was the transfer of power between Don Corleone and Michael, which in the movie happened much faster, with Michael being the main character instead of Don Corleone.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
The article gave some great information on the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.  It also went into the reasons for why it was tight casted and also how this helped the progression the story and cutting out some film time.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including  your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

I have never seen the Godfather before watching it in class. I have watched both the Sopranos and Goodfellas and I have to say that the Godfather is 100% the inspiration behind not only the Sopranos and Goodfellas but every “Gangster” movie made since it was released in 1972. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the movie, the story line was impeccable and the cinematography was breathtaking. Before this and many other films in the class I never paid attention to lighting or camera angle, but now it is one of the first things I notice.

Casablanca (1942)
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
Casablanca, another film off of the AFI’s films list that we have watched in class. AFI rated Casablanca at number 3 All-time best films. Casablanca won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay that year and was nominated for a few other awards. Casablanca was a wartime film that took place during World War II in French Morocco.  The film was a story of lost love and sacrifice in a chaotic world. One fantastic fact about the movie was that thre was two different endings that were filmed and Bergman (rick’s long lost lover) was never told which one would make it until screening.
2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
Casablanca was adapted from an unproduced screenplay called “Everybody Come’s To Rick’s”.  The movie was a standard Warner Bros. A-list movie that had a tight budget but a cast of stars, which was a very common occurrence at this time.  The greatness that came along with Casablanca was simply a result of luck.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
I thought Casablanca was a great film with a wonderful cast and satisfying plot. The article satisfied everything I though the film was and more. The article gave me a great reminder of how the great the film was and how it will last forever as a movie great.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including  your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
Overall Casablanca was my favorite film since It Happened One Night. The film had a perfect amount of action and romance with some comedy mixed into it.  For the time period the film fit perfectly since it was about the war that was happening all over the world. Casablanca wasn’t necessarily about the battles but it was about two long lost lovers in an uneasy situation.
